Things are getting formal at the Jacksonville Zoo.
In case you haven’t heard the news or seen the billboards around town, the zoo’s newest guests are all about black tie affairs. As the advertising agency for the Jacksonville Zoo, the Dalton Agency is making sure everyone is decked out in their formal attire and ready to meet the Magellanic Penguins who can now be seen at Tuxedo Coast.
The newest exhibit is located in the Play Park near Splash Ground. Visitors can watch the penguins from South America swim and play in their new home built to reflect their natural habitat. There’s even underwater viewing to get everyone up close to see their aquatic skills.
Here are some fun facts about the residents of Tuxedo Coast:
- Named after Ferdinand Magellan who saw them in 1519 during his voyage around the tip of South America
- Standing up to 27 inches tall and weighing up to 15 pounds, Magellanic Penguins are the largest of the warm weather penguins
- Their nests are built under bushes or in burrows under rocks
